Supplementary School
Okay, so I have been hearing this a lot from clients…
What’s the deal with supplements?
What should I take?
Do I need to consult my Doctor first?
So today I am going to use my AHA💡Moment to answer these and a few other supplement questions and give you a rundown of what I take and why.
Welcome To Supplementary School 😈
First off, do you need to consult your Dr. before taking supplements?
Generally no, supplements like vitamins, protein powder, etc. are literally things that we should be getting from our diet but might struggle to get enough of.
Supplements are not going to alter body chemistry in a negative way if you are just adding the basic recommended dose but they can have a great positive benefit to the body if you are not getting enough from your current diet. Which most people, myself included, are not!
Supplement
”A thing added to something else in order to complete or enhance it”
Often for most people eating a better balanced diet is vital, however, this as many of you know can prove to be challenging no matter how hard we try.
As humans, we generally eat the same things we know and love (or were raised eating) thus diversity in food only happens sometimes. Often we have our habits and we stick to them. Then when we do try to introduce something new, it takes time for us to make it stick like other things. Sometimes it even takes unlearning a past habit, to make room for a new one. It’s TOUGH!
So that is where supplementation comes in and we are lucky to have access to these aids. Things like protein, greens (veggie/ fruit), vitamins, and other supplements can be a great way to start some of these changes without having to throw out everything in the pantry, or drastically overhaul your diet.
In time working towards better eating is integral, but this just like exercise will take time to master. So adding supplements is a fast and efficient way to hit the ground running, and long term they can serve as a great method to stay consistent with proper daily nutrition especially when life gets busy.
So on that note:
”What should I take?”
Well, my daily supplement stack is as follows:
2 Omega 3 gels
Vitamin B12
Magnesium Bis-Glycinate
Vitamin D3
…and during winter months Zinc + Vitamin C to ward off colds and keep my immune system functioning. Keep in mind if you are sick and take vitamin C to “help” it’s too late lol, you are already sick. It may have a general positive effect but not as much as is promoted and I would say Zinc is something we get much less of from food and is far more important.
I also drink one 28-gram scoop of protein powder daily to make sure I hit my daily protein needs and I take a greens supplement because I suck at eating vegetables some days lol!
As humans, many of us are far off our protein requirements daily, so a simple protein shake even just with water or any type of milk is quick and easy to add in. For me, the greens supplement also tops up anything I miss during my day of eating as well.
Worst case if I get more than I need of something my body will literally excrete it for the most part, so no big deal.
When I wake up in the morning the first thing I have is BioSteel and creatine monohydrate. The Biosteel helps me hydrate and has some amino acids that are beneficial post-sleep, and the creatine monohydrate has a plethora of benefits like promoting lean muscle growth, improving energy, and overall physical performance.
Anyway I am NOT A DOCTOR, but I am a Certified Nutrition Coach and an overall healthy dude, so I thought I would share just what I take so that you have a place to start and can do some of your own research. If you DO have any major health problems then please consult your doctor as this is not medical advice! Though I imagine most things shouldn’t be a problem for you to add :)
ALSO ALSO if you would like to skip the research part and get personalized advice on supplements, food, and just how to be healthier then…
